Gujarat elections 2017 dates, schedule: The Election Commission of India announced the Gujarat elections 2017 dates today. The EC held a press conference this evening at 4 PM in which it announced the full schedule of the Gujarat as well as Himachal Pradesh polls. The Chief Election Commissioner AK Joti earlier this week had said that the Gujarat polls will be held in December this year. “There is no doubt the polls will be held in December,” Joti said, during a press conference, according to a report by The Indian Express. The Chief Election Officer while addressing the media said that bulk SMSes & voice messages on phone shall also be in the purview of election advertisements. The Election Commission has also decided to increase the size of screen on VVPAT machines to 10 cm by 5.6 cm for the voters to able to verify their vote easily.
However, he had not clarified if the election will be held in two phases or one. Joti said that it was yet to be decided. The strength in the 182-member Gujarat House currently comprises 118 BJP MLAs, 42 from the Congress, two from the NCP, and one from JD(U). The tenure of the current Gujarat government ends on January 22, 2018. Both Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress are trying their best to lure the voters in the state.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on a two-day visit to the state where he launched a flurry of projects and yesterday, the Congress vice-president who is on a three-day visit to Gujarat, attacked PM Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah on their home turf. “The two beneficiaries of the business dealings of Amit Shah’s son Jay are Narendra Modi and Shah. Achhe din aa gaye unke (good days have arrived for them),” Gandhi said, taking a dig at Modi’s promise of ushering in good times.
