Gorakhpur tragedy: Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath orders action in hospital deaths

Days after state chief secretary Rajiv Kumar submitted probe report in the death of 60 children in BRD Medical College Hospital in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath action against almost half a dozen hospital staff and Pushpa Sales Private  Limited, the company that that had apparently cut off oxygen supply over non-payment of dues, Indian Express report said.

As per report, Dr Kafeel Khan, the in-charge of AES (acute encephalitis syndrome) ward when children died on August 10 and 11, is liketo face maximum action. Yogi Adityanath’s call for action came a a day before his scheduled visit to Gorakhpur. The state government in a press release issued on Wednesday, stated that all recommendations of the investigating panel has been accepted.

The report further added that the panel recommended registration of criminal cases against former principal of BRD Medical College, Dr Rajeev Mishra, Dr Satish, in-charge of oxygen supply and head of anesthesia department; Dr Khan and Pushpa Sales Private  Limited.

Yogi Adityanath has ordered that the disciplinary steps be taken against Dr Satish, Dr Mishra, Dr Khan, Gajanan and an accountant for dereliction in duty and behavior against norms, which have been laid down for the staff, the paper said.

State government has also issued directions to register another case of criminal offence against Dr Khan for allegedly hiding facts in the affidavit which he submitted to the Chief Medical Officer of Gorakhpur.

In its report, the panel has also recommended a special audit by the CAG in supply of medicines and chemicals in the medical college for last three years. The Uttar Pradesh Government has already suspended Purnima Shukla and Dr Mishra. On Tuesday, Additional Chief Secretary Anita Bhatnagar Jain was removed from the Department of Medical Education, Indian Express said.
