Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has vehemently spoken against any kind of ties between India and Pakistan until the situation between the two neighbouring countries gets normalised. But was he indulging in double standards by endorsing ‘no ties’ with Pakistan. Yes, tension between the countries has escalated in the aftermath of Uri attacks and subsequent surgical strikes carried out by Indian Army across LoC in PoK. General sentiments are also against any form of association with our neighbour. However, if you look back at history of India-Pakistan ties, it tells a different story and puts Gambhir in very poor light. The Pakistan team toured India for a short limited over series in December 2012-January 2013 first time in five years but a full series was not agreed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Notably, cricket ties between the country were put on hold following 26/11 Mumbai attacks! The tour consisted of three One Day International, and two Twenty20 International matches. Significantly, Gambhir was in the playing XI and the last ODI was played in New Delhi.
Then, one fine morning, he had this epiphany! Why did he not raise any question then? Why did he end up playing against Pakistan? These are the questions that twitterati have asked.

Gambhir’s comments came at a time when there India and Pakistan are loggerheads over the issue of cross border terrorism by Pakistan-backed militant groups. The cricketer, in conversation with a news channel, said that he endorses ‘no ties’ between the two nations till the cross-border terrorism from Pakistan doesn’t end. Gambhir’s comments came at a time when India and Pakistan are at loggerheads over the issue of cross-border terrorism by Pakistan-backed militant groups. In India, there is rising demand by certain groups to cut even the sports and cultural ties with Pakistan. Several right-wing organisations, along with other pressure groups, have called for a ban on movies which feature Pakistan artistes.
The demand to ban Pakistan artistes has been made after Indian Army’s successful Surgical strikes along LoC. Indian army, in successful operation, has destroyed 7 terror launchpads and killed around 50 terrorists across LoC. The strikes were carried out after a cowardly attack by Pakistan-backed militants, which left 19 Indian Army Jawan martyred at a base camp in Jammu and Kashmir’s Uri. BCCI Chief Anurag Thakur has already said that he is not the board will not play any series with Pakistan until the situation is back to normal. “In the context of what has happened even considering such a thought (to play with Pakistan) is not appropriate,” Thakur had said.
