The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is all set to be celebrated across the country from Friday.

The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi has began across the country from today. The ten-day festival is celebrated every year in honour of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati’s son, who is known by 108 different names.  Among his other names, the god is also known as Lord Vinayaka and Ganapati. According to Hindu Luni-Solar calendar, the festival will start from tomorrow and end on September 5. The festival ends on the tenth day after bringing the lord home or area pandals. Special prayers are held after Lord Ganesh is brought home. On the last day of the festival,  idols are immersed in water and devotees pray to the lord to come next year. Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated mostly in Maharashtra, Goa, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Even as some states do not observe the day on a large-scale, the festival is celebrated mostly in Maharashtra. During the ten day celebrations, people are seen making idol of the lord at home. People are seen gathered on streets roaming around and chatting. From the elders to little children all love to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi. The air is filled with chants of ‘Ganpati Bappa Morya. Modak is one of the main sweet items that are made during the festival. After being offered to Lord Ganesh, sweets are distributed among devotees. Right from the common man, Bollywood stars to country’s biggest businessmen, politicians all celebrated the ten-day festival with gusto.

The festival usually falls in the month of August or September. As per of Hindu luni-solar calendar, it is celebrated in the month of Bhadrapada. Just like any other festivals, songs and aartis too play an important role during Ganesh Chaturthi.
