Former Union Minister and President of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Sharad Pawar has tweeted a thumbs-up for PM Narendra Modi’s decision to ban the Rs 500, Rs 1,000 banknotes effective from Tuesday midnight. PM Modi had said that this was being done to curb black money, terror financing and more such illegal activities by unscrupulous elements. The move by the PM has created much inconvenience for the man on the street, but no protests have been made although the opposition parties have targetted the BJP led NDA government over the move saying it will not affect the financial firmament in India much. While all BJP leaders and allies have supported the move, very few in the rival parties have gone ahead to voice their support. Sharad Pawar is not one of them.

However, Sharad Pawar is not the only opposition politician who has said that they support the PM Modi move. Before Pawar, Bihar chief minister and Janata Dal(U) leader Nitish Kumar had done the same saying that it may lead to short term pain, but over the longer period it would be very beneficial for the country.

Sharad Pawar, who is close to the PM (Modi himself has praised the Maharashtra strongman, a former Congress stalwart, on a number of occasions) took to the social media to offer his congratulations to PM Modi. Sharad Pawar said: “We welcome the decision to #demonetise currency notes – Rs 500 & Rs 1,000. This will curb #BlackMoney and #terror financing.”

PM Modi had announced on Tuesday night that he has imposed a ban on the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes and that his government would be unveiling a new Rs 500 note as well as a Rs 2,000 note soon. He has given everyone holding these higher denomination notes time to exchange their notes with the new ones at banks and post offices.
