Kulsoom Nawaz, wife of ousted former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif, has been diagnosed with throat cancer, doctors in the United Kingdom was quoted as saying by Pakistani news channels. Kulsoom had filed nomination papers for NA-120 in Lahore after the seat fell vacant following Sharif’s disqualification to hold any office by the Supreme Court on July 28 in the Panama Papers case. Kulsoom’s treatment will begin in a few days, Geo News quoted unnamed sources as saying. Kulsoom, in her mid-60s had suddenly left for London for medical checkup at the time when nomination papers for NA-120 were being scrutinised, the report said.
Kulsoom’s doctors are of the view that her throat cancer is treatable, Samaa TV reported. There was no official word about Kulsoom’s health. Maryam Nawaz, daughter of Sharif, will run the election campaign in Kulsoom’s absence. The Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) candidate for NA-120 will not participate in the initial campaigns for the constituency, the report said. Nawaz won the seat by a substantial margin in the 2013 general elections, defeating Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e- Insaf’s Yasmin Rashid, who is again contesting for the seat this time around. The Lahore High Court Appellate Tribunal, on Monday rejected all appeals filed against the nomination papers of PML-N candidate Kulsoom Nawaz for the NA-120 by-poll.
