The Bharatiya Janata Party, keeping an eye on the Dalit vote base in Uttar Pradesh paid tributes to to Dhamma Viriyo, the outgoing leader of the Akhil Bharatiya Bhikkhu Mahasangh (ABBM) and welcomed Bhadant Karunanand Mahathero as the new leader of the organisation at an event convened by BJP MP Udit Raj at the Constitution Club in the national capital. The BJP leaders who attended the event also thanked members of the organisation for helping the party achieve the stunning victory in the state assembly elections held earlier this year, in which the BJP won a landslide victory in the state assembly elections. The event was attended by senior BJP leaders such as the party’s general secretary Shiv Prakash, RSS joint secretary Krishna Gopal, according to an Indian Express report.
The acknowledgment and appreciation of the group expressed by the BJP for the Dhamma Chetna Yatra, which was organised by the ABBM ahead of the elections came at a time when the BJP was attempting to consolidate its Dalit support base across India and especially UP, where the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samajwadi PArty (BSP) is losing its traditional vote base which comprises of Dalits, as per the report.
While addressing the event BJP general secretary Bhupender Yadav said that the organisation under Viriyo had greatly helped the BJP. Bhupender Yadav said, ”Dhamma Viriyo had been a great strength to this phenomenon of change”. The BJP leaders appreciating the role of the outgoing ABBM chief also said that Viriyo had addressed over 4 million in various rallies along with the BJP Party President Amit Shah and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
