Rahul Gandhi is trying his best to revive the Congress’ fortune in Uttar Pradesh. The party has been out of power in the state for over two decades. While one can’t yet predict how many seats Congress would win in UP, this may be the best time for Rahul to become the president of the party, according to a report.
Rahul’s elevation as the president of the Congress has been speculated for long. However, it has not yet become true. According to IE, there is a renewed pressure on Rahul to become Congress chief ahead of UP Assembly elections. Party leaders have suggested that there could be an organisational shake-up after Diwali and Rahul could replace his mother, Sonia Gandhi, as the Congress president before the announcement of the election schedule.
Those suggesting the change in party leadership argue that if Congress fails to perform in UP, there would be questions on Rahul’s leadership, which may further delay his elevation, says IE. Congress leaders also said that the suspense over Priyanka Vadra’s role in the party and UP campaign would end soon.
One can infer from the IE report that the Congress can’t do without Gandhi family but they still want a suitable opportunity to anoint Rahul Gandhi as its president. They would do so irrespective of whether Congress wins, loses or gets wiped out completely.
