Welcome back home, EAM Sushma Swaraj extends warm welcome to Father Tom Uzhunnalil

Father Tom Uzhunnalil, who was recently released from captivity by the ISIS after 18 months, has finally returned to India - he reached New Delhi at 7.40 am this morning.

Father Tom Uzhunnalil, who was recently released from captivity by the ISIS after 18 months, has finally returned to India – he reached New Delhi at 7.40 am this morning. Thereafter, he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at 11.30 AM. Union Minister of State for Tourism Alphons Kannanthanam, Kerala MPs KC Venugopal, Jose K Mani, Anto Antony, as well as Arch Bishop Mar Kuriakose Bharanikulangara, received Father Tom Uzhunnalil at the airport today. Father Tom Uzhunnalil expressed his happiness and gratitude towards the Almighty and all those who had put in their efforts for his release.

As per news reports, Father Tom Uzhunnalil will pay a visit to the Vatican Ambassador to India after his meeting with PM Modi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj at 11.30 AM. At 4.30 PM, Father Tom Uzhunnalil will address a press meet at the Delhi CBCI centre, attend a prayer at the Sacred Heart church at 4.30 PM and return to Bengaluru on Friday. He is expected to reach Kochi on Sunday and meet Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan early next week on Tuesday.

Father Tom Uzhunnalil, a Catholic priest from Kerala, had been abducted by terrorists in March last year while he was in Aden. He was held captive for 18 months after being abducted from an old age home that had been run by the Missionaries of Charity at Aden. In December 2016, he had appealed for help to the Indian government through a video that was released on YouTube. News reports say that he was taken to an undisclosed place in Yemen and recently, he was rescued from this undisclosed place.
