Farm Loan Waiver: Amidst all the unrest going around across the country among farmers, Harinam Singh of the Bhartiya Kisan Union on Wednesday spoke on the issue and said, “Fight is over the fact that farmers aren’t getting the right price for their produce.” He further talked about the prices that are paid to the farmers for their produce and said, “We ask why does the need to waive loans arise? How many loans will you waive? Farmers need right prices.” This comment by the Bhartiya Kisan Union comes hours after the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Cabinet today in a meeting held in Delhi cut interest rates imposed on farmers’ loans by as much as 4 percent. While farmers earlier had to pay an interest of 9%, they will now have to pay interest of 5 % on loan up to Rs 3 lakh limit as the rates have been slashed by 4 per cent.
Madhya Pradesh became the centre of farmers’ agitation last week and as many as 5 farmers were killed in police firing. Farmers have also committed suicide due to indebtedness. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan today visited the families of all those farmers who lost their lives in the past few days. After Badwan, Chouhan also visited Mandsaur’s Lodh village and met kin of farmers killed in police firing. Section 144 which was imposed in MP’s Mandsaur was also lifted today. In Maharashtra, CM Devendra Fadnavis has cleared a farm loan waiver and the same has happened in Uttar Pradesh too.
