Former Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Rita Bhaguna Joshi on Thursday formally joined the BJP, bringing in freh jolt party for the grand old party, just months before the Assembly polls.

Accompanied by BJP chief Amit Shah, she announced her decision to join the party. Stressing that she had been with Congress for 24 years out of her 27 year old political career, Joshi said she was quite impressed by what the Narendra Modi Government-led government has done to control terrorism. She said that both the army and the NDA Government at the Centre are praise-worthy for the surgical strike. It was shameful that some people had asked for proof of surgical strikes by the army.

Joshi said it was wrong for the Congress to create doubts in the minds of people over an operation carried out by the Indian Army.

“No one is beyond the nation. When one of the biggest parties of the country raises doubts over surgical strikes, what would be the impression of the country in the world,” she said.

“When the whole world has accepted that we carried out surgical strikes, I didn’t like it when Cong and other parties questioned it. Words like ‘khoon ki dalali’ were used by Congress leaders. I was very sad hearing it,” Joshi added.

Joshi joining BJP is being seen as a big jolt to Rahul Gandhi’s campaign in UP to revive the fortunes of the Congress in the state.

Joshi also attacked the Samajwadi Party for looting the state, saying that SP has destroyed the entire state.

In past, Joshi had been very critical of the BJP. However, today she said, “I took the decision to join BJP as it is in the interest of the country.”

In his reaction, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said, ”Avsarvaadi neta ek jagah tiktey nahin. Asli baat hai ki wo seat jeet nahin sakti thi, muqabla mushkil tha.”

UP Congress Head Raj Babbar had this to say about Bahagun’a moving out of Congress, ”Ye itihaas ki professor thi, shayd yehi karan hai ki ye apne parivaar ke itihaas ko dohrane mei chook nhi rahi hai. Inke parivaar mei ye 4th -5th badlav hai.”
