In what appears to be another shock to the already divided opposition, it was reported that Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik was likely to join the sub-committee formed by the Centre to access the impact of demonetisation. According to reports by IE, the Union finance Minister Arun Jaitley spoke with Naveen Pattnaik a day ago and invited him to be a part of the panel. Some Biju Janata Dal (BJD) sources told IE that Naveen Patnaik, who had earlier backed the demonetisation move by the centre was willing to be on board after the centre’s effort to persuade him. The sources called this a positive move.
IE also reports that the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley was expected to discuss the details of the panel with the Odisha Chief Minister after he lands in the state capital, Bhubaneswar. Jaitley will be in Bhubaneswar to address the plenary session of the Make in Odisha conclave. Sources believed that the Finance Minister’s offer would help Naveen politically as joining the panel would give him a better chance at fulfilling his demands on women self-help groups, which is considered a major vote bank for the BJD.
The Odisha CM was seen speaking about the women SHG members facing troubles due to the limit on bank transactions. Even during his meet with the Prime Minister last week, he had requested Modi to allow the SHGs to fully operate their bank accounts. he had also requested that the SHGs should be allowed to work as banking correspondents or handle ATMS.
