It is quite unknown in many parts of India that even people are made to sit on the basis of caste for food in a temple. Such is the case with Udupi Sri Krishna temple against which dalit leader Jignesh Mevani is working. He is also working to ban cow protection groups.

Jignesh who emerged as a credible dalit voice after the Una lynching held his first public meeting outside Gujarat in Bangalore. He said that the Karnataka government should direct temple authorities to change the existing laws or face protests. “We are willing to go to jail for this,’’ he said at a Dalit “self-respect convention’’ in the coastal town of Udupi.

Jignesh alleged that the Karnataka government should stop discrimination on the allocation of land on the basis caste and should release a white paper on land allocated to private industry.
