Rape convict Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh’s adopted daughter and close confidante Honeypreet Insaan is curiously absconding. Police are yet to trace her while several possible places where she could be are doing the rounds. From Nepal to Rajasthan to Mumbai and now a new one. Yes, don’t be surprised if you read that she could be hiding in Sirsa itself – in the city that hosts Dera Sachha Sauda.

Ram Rahim is presently serving a 20-year jail sentence for raping two sadhvis 15 years ago. His closest associate and reported “physiotherapist”, Honeypreet was seen accompanying him in the helicopter, while he was being taken to Rohtak from Panchkula after a special CBI court convicted him in the rape cases on August 25. Honeypreet was also seen accompanying Ram Rahim when he was brought to the special court for the pronouncement of the verdict in the rape cases. And then, she suddenly disappeared, even as entire security machinery of Haryana had their eyes on the Dera and its people in the wake of the violence following Ram Rahim’s conviction.

Honeypreet is believed to have plotted a failed escape plan for Gurmeet. Booked for sedition, Honeypreet is also accused of plotting the widespread violence that killed 41 people on August 25.

Initially, police had suspected Honeypreet may have escaped to Nepal. A police team had even visited Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh bordering Nepal. Meanwhile on September 12, reports said police had traced her mobile phone to Barmer in Rajasthan. Times Now had reported that a call was made from Honeypreet’s phone to top management of Dera Sachha Sauda.

On September 15, Haryana police arrested the driver of Honeypreet a location near the religious town of Salasar in Rajasthan.

Honeypreet, whose real name is Priyanka Taneja and has been absconding since August 25 evening. Despite so many developments, Honeypreet’s real whereabout appears to have become an unsolved puzzle for Haryana police.

On Saturday, an interesting addition to the curious case of missing Honeypreet was made by an India Today report. Khatta Singh, a former driver of the disgraced Dera Sachha Sauda chief told the channel that Honeypreet could be anywhere in cities like Pune, Chhattisgarh or Hiimachal Pradesh. Khatta even said he would not be surprised if she is founding “hiding in Sirsa itself”.

Murder trial

Police may or may not ever be able to trace Honeypreet. Meanwhile, final arguments in the twin murder cases in which the disgraced Dera chief is an accused have started in a special CBI court. The former driver has filed an application to record a fresh statement against Dera chief.

The twin cases are about the murders of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati and former Dera manager Ranjit Singh. Chhatrapati was shot at in October 2002 after a newspaper owned by him, ‘Poora Sach’, published an anonymous letter narrating how women were being sexually exploited by Gurmeet inside the Dera. Ranjit was allegedly shot dead in July 2002 for his suspected role in circulating the anonymous letter which made the allegations of sexual exploitation.

On Saturday, Gurmeet, who is lodged in Rohtak’s Sunaria jail on charges of rape, appeared in the court via video-conferencing. He has been named as the main conspirator in the cases. Khatta, a witness in the murder cases, had retracted his statement in 2012 as he was under pressure from Ram Rahim and his “goons”.

The next date of hearing on Khatta’s application is September 22.
