CPM Rajya Sabha MP Ritabrata Banerjee was expelled from the primary membership of the party for going against party norms, reported ANI. Banerjee who was touted as the next big thing for the Communist Party has been surrounded by multiple controversies. Earlier, on June 2, Banerjee was suspended for three months over his lavish lifestyle. Before that on February 23, CPM had cautioned Banerjee over the raging controversy in the social media involving him. Banerjee gave an interview to Bengali channel ABP Ananda during which he lashed out at a few party leaders alleging they were jealous of him. He also posted a tweet saying the party is not anyone’s property. Moreover, in February a senior CPM leader told PTI,”His (Ritabrata) lifestyle is unlike that of a communist. We have received a lot of complaints.”
Earlier this year, after a party member raised questions on Banerjee using costly gadgets like an Apple Watch and Mont Blanc pen, the MP allegedly wrote to his employer complaining against him. Banerjee had made his stand clear before the State Committee of the party.
In 2012, CPM had expelled young leader Prasenjit Bose, who resigned from the party attacking the leadership for supporting Pranab Mukherjee’s Presidential bid, saying he had sought to “malign” its political line. Bose, the convener of party’s research unit and a familiar face in TV debates, had then quit the party and through an open letter, attacked the party for committing a “grave error” by supporting Mukherjee.
