Congress pays tributes to Rajiv Gandhi on his 26th death anniversary

Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on May 21, 1991, in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. The late Prime Minister was campaigning in Tamil Nadu ahead of elections when he was assassinated.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi paid tributes to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on the occasion of his 26th death anniversary in the national capital today. Priyanka and Rahul Vadra also paid respect to the former Prime Minister, according to an Indian Express report.

Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on May 21, 1991, in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. The late Prime Minister was campaigning in Tamil Nadu ahead of elections when he was assassinated. The deadly attack on Rajiv Gandhi was carried out in the form of a suicide bombing by Thenmozhi Rajaratnam, also known as Dhanu, who was linked to Tamilian terror group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), according to an Indian Express report.

Seven persons namely, Nalini, Robert Payas, Murugan, Santhan, Perarivalan, Jayakumar and Ravichandran had been convicted in Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination. Nalini was the first person who was granted a death sentence, the sentence was later confirmed by the Supreme Court. The Government of Tamil Nadu under Article 161 of the Constitution commuted Nalini’s sentence to life imprisonment on April 24, 2000.

The apex court commuted death sentences of Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan citing delay in deciding on their mercy plea in February 2014, according to an Indian Express report.

Rajiv Gandhi had become the Prime Minister of India after the assassination of his mother Indira Gandhi at the hands of her bodyguards at her official residence in Delhi in 1984.
