Chennai weather forecast: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday said heavy rains will continue in Tamil Nadu and Kerala at least till tomorrow, and thereafter, moderate rainfall would occur for a week.
IMD Director, B.P Yadav said that the worst spell of this rainfall will continue till tomorrow and there will be decrease in the intensity of rainfall thereafter. However, he also stated that moderate rainfall would continue to take place for the next one week in Kerela and Tamil Nadu.
“The good thing about these rains is that the warnings were being issued before hands. The administration in Tamil Nadu as well as the Centre in New Delhi was informed about the possibility of rains three-four days ago. These rains are a part of the North-East Monsoon system and because of that only there is rainfall in the Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu region, originating from the systems in Bay of Bengal,” Yadav told ANI.
“The rainfall has been there on a consistent basis from the last three days and today, maximum rainfall of about 25-30-40 cm have taken place in north-coastal Tamil Nadu, south-coastal Andhra Pradesh and in the interior parts of Tamil Nadu,” he added.
Tamil Nadu has been affected by the worst ever flood, causing a huge loss to life and property in the entire state, especially in the capital.
Many parts of the city and the suburbs have been flooded from the incessant rains that have hit Chennai in the past 24 hours.
The water has entered inside houses in the low-lying areas of Anna nagar and there is water-logging in almost every part of the city.
The flight operations at the Chennai Airport have been closed for the whole day because of the flooded water on the runway.
