The Centre has identified a number of ordnance factories (OF) and asked them to focus on arms, ammunition and other ‘core competencies’. OFs including clothing factory at Avadi, Shahjahanpur, and Kanpur have been making 84 items like belts, shoes, wooden packing boxes, uniforms and other items that can be easily outsourced. “The idea behind such a move is to ensure that the OFs are used for critical items that could be used in different weapon platforms that are expected to be made in the country under PM Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative,” sources told FE. “With the huge man power and expertise, most of the OFs are underutilised or are producing items that can be outsourced from the private sector at a cheaper cost.” The wide range of products being manufactured in 41 OFs across the country include weapons, ammunition, explosives, propellants, chemicals, military vehicles and civilian arms and ammunition. They also manufacture support equipment, clothes, troop comfort and general stores among other items.
