Cauvery water controversy: MK Stalin, senior DMK leaders held

Former Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and DMK leaders M.K. Stalin was arrested on Monday along with party MLAs, during a protest in the state asking the Centre to constitute a Cauvery management board.

Several farmers organisations in the state began 48 hours rail roko in Tiruchi and delta districts. Ex-minister K.N. Nehru was arrested while trying kade at the Srirangam Railway Station. Another senior DMK leader Durai Murugan was held after a rail roko at the Katpadi station.

However, as per officials, there was no disruption of rail services. More than 2,000 farmers and supporters of several parties have been arrested in the central region which consist of eight districts.

Earlier in the day, central technical team submitted its report to the Supreme Court. The reports suggest grim situation in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

The report said that nearly 42 of 48 42 of 48 talukas of Karnataka in Cauvery basin has been affected because of drought. It added that there was no water in Tamil Nadu for cattle.

Last month, several vehicles which had Tamil Nadu numbers were torched by the protesters , who were protesting the Supreme Court order for Karnataka government to release Cauvery water to Karnataka. Some building in the capital Bengaluru were also vendalised.
