On Monday evening, a Canadian national was reportedly kidnapped in Koraput district on the Odisha-Chattisgarh border. The Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj has sought a report from Odisha government regarding the incident. In the meanwhile, she has also spoken to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to underline the urgency of the situation. On Tuesday she took to Tweeter and said, ” I have spoken to Shri Naveen Patnaik, Chief Minister reg the reported abduction of a Canadian national in Koraput district of Odisha.”

According to reports of Telangana Today, the foreign national, John, went on a bike ride into the forests, but did not come back. Authorities now suspect he has been kidnapped by Naxalites (CPI Maoist). Security forces have taken up combing operations and the Chhattisgarh police too has also launched a massive search operation – the Canadian national who went missing on Monday. The police recently stepped up combing in the area as 12 CRPF Jawans were gunned down by the Maoists. Meanwhile, surveillance has been stepped up in the forest routes leading to Malkangiri district.

Though this is not the first incident that came into the light of the attack on foreign nationals, an African student was allegedly attacked in Noida. However, Sushma Swaraj spoke to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister today about the attack after the foreign student pleaded with her for swift action, saying living in the area was becoming a “life threatening” issue. Swaraj said the central government was taking immediate action and that UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had assured her of a fair and impartial investigation into this “unfortunate” incident.
