The Cabinet on Wednesday approved amendments to the central list of other backward classes (OBCs) for two states—Gujarat and Uttarakhand—for making suitable changes in the central list of OBCs by way of inclusion or correction of castes or communities as per the advices received from the National Commission for Backward Classes.

Four castes/communities have been included in the central list of OBCs: Patni Jamat or Turk Jamat (all Muslims) and Sipai in Gujarat and Kahar and Tanwar Singhariya in Uttarakhand.

The amendments will enable the persons belonging to these castes/ communities to avail of benefits of reservation in government services and in central educational institutions as per the existing policy. They will also be eligible for the benefit under various Centre welfare schemes.
