In a historic verdict, BJP candidate Manju Dadu has bagged a phenomenal victory in the bypoll elections held in the Nepanagar Assembly. Daughter of late MLA Rajendra Shyamlal, Manju won the assembly seat by a massive 40,600 votes. 71.25 per cent polling was recorded in Nepanagar on November 19. Congress has reposed faith in tribal leader Antar Singh Barde in the reserved seat (ST), where the competition was between four candidates. Currently, the BJP is also leading by 10,800 votes in Shahdol Lok Sabha seat.
The vote counting for the bypoll election 2016 in four Lok Sabha and nine Assembly seats is underway since morning and the results are scheduled to be announced soon. Comprising of six states and one Union Territory where the elections held on Saturday, the bypoll is touted to be the first test for the BJP government in the wake of its recent demonetisation drive, earlier this month.
The recently held bypoll elections were conducted for three assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu, two in Tripura and one each in Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh and West Bengal and the union territory of Puducherry.
In the last update from the election commission today, BJP was leading in Assam with 24,312 votes on Lakhimpur Lok Sabha seat followed by Congress with 12484 votes. CPI(M) has fiercely won both Barjala and Khowai assembly seat earlier this morning. Its party candidate Jhumu Sarkar with 15,769 votes defeated his immediate BJP rival Shistamohan Das by a marginal 3,374-votes in Barjala (SC) constituency. Even the Congress has marked victory on the Nellithoppu assembly seat.
