BMC election results 2017: 156 cases of malpractice, during the Mumbai municipal elections, which include cases of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) tampering have been registered by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) legal department this year. The EVMs were allegedly tampered in the municipal elections which were conducted in February this year. There is a significant jump in the number of instances of malpractice cases in the elections held this year in comparison to the last municipal poll held in 2012. There were 2 reported instances of tampering in the 2012 BMC polls, the number jumped to 17 this year, according to an Indian Express report.
Officials in the legal department have told The Indian Express that 156 malpractice cases have been filed in the small causes court. The officials also said that during the 2012 elections only 101 cases were filed, according to The Indian Express.
Several sitting corporators have been named in the EVM tampering cases this year. Samajwadi Party leader and two-time corporator Rais Sheikh, Sena corporator Anant Bhiku Nar, NCP corporator Manisha Rahate and Congress corporator Vithal Lokare have been named in EVM related cases, according to an Indian Express report.
There has also been a rise in allegations of involvement of corporators in unauthorised construction. In 2012 only 1 civic body leader was accused of being involved in unauthorised construction to 20 this year. Candidature can be canceled if the candidate doesn’t reveal that he has been served a notice in the past, as per the Indian Express report.
According to BMC officials, there are only 33 cases of corrupt practices which were reported this year down from 55 in the previous municipal poll.
