At a time when India ranks just behind China in global population and the issue remains to be a cause of much worry for the country, there are people who totally go against the tide. In a shocking statement, BJP MLA Vikram Saini said that Hindus should not stop producing children until a law on population control is passed. Saini, who represents Khatauli constituency in Muzaffarnagar district, reportedly made this statement while addressing a population control campaign programme. Vikram Saini said, ‘Jab tak kaanoon nahi banta (on population control) Hindu bhaiyon apko chhoot hai rukna mat. (Until there is a law on population control, Hindu brothers you have all the freedom, no need to stop).’

That’s not all, Saini said that he has also asked his wife to keep producing children. “Until a law on population control comes into existence, I have told my wife to keep producing children, even though she told me that two were enough. When we had two children, my wife said we did not need a third one, but I said we should have four to five,” he added. He further said that Hindus have accepted the two-child policy, but others have not.
Saini said that the law should be equal for everyone. What is to be noted here is that Saini’s statement comes at a time when Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking directions to the Union government to adopt ‘two-child policy’ across the country. The PIL has urged the apex court to implement the two-child policy norms throughout the country as well as promote family planning.
This is not the first time when Saini has made such controversial remarks. Earlier in January, he had said that “Hindustan is for Hindus” while asking Muslims to go to Pakistan. He had said that some “irresponsible leaders” had allowed some Muslims to live in India. “During partition, due to them (Muslims), the Hindus are facing problem in the country. If they (Muslims) had not stopped in India, property of crores would be of the Hindus,” Saini had claimed. Last year, Saini sparked a controversy after he had threatened to break the limbs of those who kill and disrespect cows. He is also an accused in the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots case and was detained under the National Security Act.
