As West Bengal government made public 64 secret files on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on Friday, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said the Centre too is serious on the issue of Netaji’s mysterious disappearance and asked Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee not to play politics over it.

The BJP said that the files the WB government has made public “may not have” international ramification.

“No other Prime Minister has been so pro-active as Narendra Modi on the issue. He has met the Bose family members and formed a committee to examine the whole complexity of the issue,” BJP national spokesperson M J Akbar told PTI.

“We are confident that he will do whatever is required to be done on the matter keeping the national interest in mind,” Akbar said.

“We urge the state government not to play politics on this issue. The files the state have declassified may not have international ramification. But the files that are with the Centre may have implications on relations with some countries,” BJP national secretary Siddharth Nath Singh said.

Sixty-four secret files relating to Netaji that could throw light on his mysterious disappearance–an enigma of seven decades — were today released by the state government with Chief Minister Banerjee asking the Centre to follow suit.

Welcoming the state’s move, the Congress said the Centre should come up with a declassification policy regarding bringing in public all classified files after a specific period of time.

“We too feel that the Centre should declassify the Netaji files. The Centre should also come up with a declassification policy, under which classified files would be brought in public domain after a certain period of time — maybe 20 years, 30 years, 40 years,” Senior Congress leader Manish Tiwari told PTI.

BJP is “more than welcome” to declassify Netaji files, another senior Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar said.

All India forward Bloc, a party formed by Netaji himself, welcomed the declassification of files and demanded that the Centre make public 135 secret files lying with it.

“The Union government’s argument that if the files were released, India’s relation with some countries may be affected has no logic,” AIFB general secretary Debabrata Biswas said.

CPI(M) alleged that Trinamool and BJP are hand in gloves on the issue of declassification of Netaji files.

“BJP wants to bring down Nehru-Gandhi family. We too had our share of differences with Nehru. BJP is now trying to test the waters before taking the decision to declassify files that are lying with the Centre,” CPI(M) politburo member Mohammed Salim said.
