Facing vehement protests over demonetisation from the opposition parties, the NDA government found an ally in JD(U) on Monday. The Nitish Kumar govt. stated its support for the “big” move made by PM Narendra Modi. This support has gained overwhelming public response to the Bihar Chief Minister as witnessed in his ‘Nischay Yatra’ stopovers. The JD(U) supremo also sees this as an opportunity to “stand out as a sane voice” as other bigger leaders from the non-BJP camp continue to attack the Modi government.

JD(U), clearly dismissed rumours about the party moving closer to the BJP by supporting the demonetisation issue, but stated that it is playing the role of a constructive opposition. A source from JD(U) mentioned that its occasional support to the BJP “keeps ally Lalu Prasad in check”. He added, that there is no question of forming an alliance with BJP but when the Modi government takes good steps, they should support it. JD(U) also made it clear that its senior leader Sharad Yadav’s aggressive attitude on the note ban, was only his views on public inconvenience and not about “rollback of ban of high denomination notes”.

A senior JD (U) politician closer to CM Nitish Kumar said: “The note ban has huge public support and Nitish Kumar would not say a single thing that goes against the public mood. He has always supported strong steps to weed out black money and now that one big move is taken by the Centre, it has to be welcomed.” He also added that time has come to seize the opportunity, as no tall leader from Opposition camp stands by the demonetisation policy. He concluded by saying that its time to consolidate a clean national image for their leader Nitish Kumar.

On JD(U)’s stand on corruption, he explained that how their party has brought Bihar Special Court Act to lay down the provision to seize property of any individual involved in corruption, and how JD(U) stopped MLALAD fund and introduced voluntary disclosure of property by all government functionaries, from CM to Class three employees. Nitish’s support to Modi on demonetisation is solely to bring back black money from outside the country.
