Babri Masjid Demolition Case: A CBI court in Lucknow today granted bail to all accused, including BJP stalwarts Murli Manohar Joshi, LK Advani and Union Minister Uma Bharti, in connection with Babri Masjid demolition case. The court, which is hearing two separate cases relating to the demolition, would also frame charges against Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, Mahant Ram Vilas Vedanti, Baikunth Lal Sharma alias Prem Ji, Champat Rai Bansal, Mahant Dharma Das and Satish Pradhan in the second matter. Special CBI judge S K Yadav had categorically mentioned that no application for adjournment or exemption from personal appearance shall be entertained. The Supreme Court had on April 19 ordered prosecution of Advani (89), Joshi (83), Uma Bharti, and other accused of criminal conspiracy in the politically sensitive case.

9.00 pm:  Charged with criminal conspiracy in the Babri mosque demolition case, BJP leader Vinay Katiyar today insisted that “there was no conspiracy as the structure was razed openly” by a big crowd.

8.25 pm: “Uma Bharti and senior leaders will put there defence in the court,” says BJP’s Gaura Bhatia on a TV show.

7.58 pm: Earlier in the day, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said, “Those who are guilty must be punished in accordance with the law of the land without any fear or favour.”

7.34 pm: Katiyar, while speaking to Babri demolition incident, saod: “He (Mulayam) himself has admitted that 16 people were killed. He murdered them, he should be booked for it. Babri Masjid was not there, the place belongs to the Ram temple and even the High Court has passed the order.”

6.10 pm: Earlier in the day, BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj today said “no power on earth” could stop the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya ahead of proceedings in the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition.

5.40 pm: “The judge accepted our plea to charge the leaders with criminal conspiracy and the accused are already facing trial for making provocative speeches that incited Hindus to pull down the Babri mosque,” M R. Shamshad, a lawyer representing Muslim leaders and victims of the violence, was quoted as saying by Reuters.

5.20 pm: Earlier in the day, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath today met senior BJP leader L K Advani who is here to appear before a special CBI court in connection with a case relating to the 1992 demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya.

4.51 pm: The apex court, while resortoring the charge last month, described the demolition of the 16th century mosque as a “crime” which shook the “secular fabric of the Constitution”.

12:45 pm: BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj today said “no power on earth” could stop the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya ahead of proceedings in the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition case. The Babri Masjid versus Ram temple debate should be dropped now, he said, claiming that those who had opposed the construction of the temple were now Ram bhakts.

12:40 pm: The Muslim community too was in favour of a temple being built in Ayodhya, he told mediapersons. “No power on earth will be able to stop the construction of a grand Ram temple in Ayodhya,” he said.

12:30 pm: Meanwhile, senior Hindutva leader Ram Vilas Vedanti, an accused in the case, said that he was among those who had pulled down the structure in Ayodhya. “I was one of those who had pulled down the dome of the disputed structure in Ayodhya,” Vedanti, who is here to appear before the special court in the Ayodhya case, told reporters.

12:17 pm: The apex court had also directed the trial court in Lucknow to commence the proceedings in four weeks and hear the matter on a day-to-day basis so as to complete the hearing in two years. The apex court also said there will be no ‘de novo’ (fresh) trial. The CBI has been ordered to ensure that at least one prosecution witness appears in the trial court for recording of testimony.

Later, the chief minister held a meeting with Advani and other senior leaders.
