Assam encounter: Three Army jawans killed, four injured in Tinsukia

Three Army Jawans were martyred and four others injured in in encounter with suspected ULFA terrorists near in Tinsukia, Assam today.

Three Army Jawans were martyred and four injured in an encounter with suspected ULFA terrorists near Digboi in Tinsukia, Assam today. Eastern command of the Indian Army confirmed the incident. “Three Soldiers martyred & Four Soldiers Injured. Search Operation is on,” the Earstern Command tweeted.

According to the Army, the incident happened during an IED blast at Pengri, Tinsukia. The search operation against the suspected ULFA terrorists, who are believed to be responsible for the incident, is on.

The deceased soldiers were Havildar Multan Singh, Havildar Rishipal Singh and NK Narpat Singh.

Indian Army offered condolences to the family of martyrs. Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh expressed “deep anguish” over the death of jawans. “Deeply anguished to learn of the death of Army soldiers in a blast in Tinsukia. I pray for the speedy recovery of our injured soldiers. MHA is closely monitoring the situation,” Singh tweeted.

 

This was the first major attack by the terrorists since the BJP-led government came to power in Assam. IE reported that the ambush was carried out by a joint group of ULFA and NSCN(K) militants near the oil town of Digboi. The soldiers belonged to the 15 Kumaon Regiments.

The incident happened at around 5.30 AM on Saturday. Tinsukia district superintendent of police Mugdhajyoti Dev said that it was definitely the handiwork of ULFA faction of Paresh Barua with the support of NSCN(K).

According to Jyoti, there were at least 15 militants who fired from the Upper Dehing reserved forest.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has asked security forced to launch a massive operation against the terrorists.

Earlier agencies had quoted Mukesh Sahay, DGP Assam, confirming the incident as one one soldier was killed initially. Sahay had also said that the encounter with the suspected terrorists was on.

As per earlier reports, the soldiers were killed while others were injured in an IED blast in Assam’s Digboi area, PTI reported. Defence sources said the soldiers were travelling in an Army vehicle when the blast took place. “Three soldiers were injured and one died while being evacuated to military hospital,” the sources said, adding that search is on for the militants involved in the blast.
