Addressing eminent citizens in a meet in Raipur, Chhatisgarh, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Amit Shah said that the party’s aim was not to make prime ministers but to make India a world leader. In what seemed like a dig at the succession policy of the Congress party, Amit Shah said that the BJP does not choose its leaders based on genes but solely on merit. The BJP president added that if internal matters of a political party were based on democracy, then democracy in the nation would also remain strong.

His statements about inheriting a party might have come in the wake of reports about the Congress Working Committee planning to conduct a meeting to discuss elevating party vice president Rahul Gandhi to the post of President, thereby replacing his mother Sonia Gandhi. Some sections of the Congress party has been hoping to make Rahul Gandhi, lead the party since 2016. Meanwhile, former minister and senior leader of the Congress had told Indian Express, “All I can say is Rahul Gandhi is a Member of Parliament from Amethi. Rahul Gandhi is vice-president of the Congress party and we all expect Rahul Gandhi to become president of the Congress party… Rahul Gandhi obviously cannot be chief minister for 29 states… We all hope and expect…that he will be Congress president…”.

Indian Express reports that ever since Congress’ humiliating defeat in the Uttar Pradesh elections, despite its tie-up with the then ruling Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party, there have been demands for Rahul Gandhi to take over from Sonia Gandhi, the top post in the grand old party. It must be noted that Sonia Gandhi has been at the helm of the Congress party for 18 years.
