While the Samajwadi Party stared at a split over him on Monday, Amar Singh spent some “casual moments” in Kolkata. He met journalists at the office of a regional daily, appeared on a TV show with former India cricketer Virender Sehwag and had ‘golgappas’ and kulfi in West Bengal capital’s iconic Chowringhee market. Firstpost reports that there were also rumours of Amar Singh attending a special prayer in Kolkata.
Interestingly throughout Monday, members of Mulayam Singh Yadav’s family including his son Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav and brother Shivpal Yadav brawled over Amar Singh.
Akhilesh blamed Amar for triggering all the fresh troubles in the party. But Shivpal and Mulayam batted for Amar, who was recently inducted in SP and sent to Rajya Sabha. Mulayam went to the extent of announcing that Amar is like his brother. A local newspaper in Kolkata even quoted Amar calling Ramgopal a “eunuch”
One may be baffled as to why Mulayam and Shivpal, the men who have thrown their blood-cousin Ramgopal Yadav out of the party for apparently siding with Akhilesh, are supporting Amar and that too so strongly.
Writing for the Firstpost, Shantanu Guha Ray provides some clarity in his report. He says Amar has been “exhorting” Mulayam to take the charge of ticket distribution for the upcoming Assembly elections in the state in his hand. Akhilesh is strongly against any such move. The report says that Amar has also been encouraging Mulayam’s second son, Prateek Yadav, and his wife Aparna Yadav to get into active politics and fight on SP tickets.
Prateek’s mother and second wife of Mulayam, Sadhna Gupta, has been blamed by some SP members for “orchestrating” the current crisis in the party. Guha reports that Amar has also introduced Prateek and Aparna to top corporates as the “future faces” of Mulayam’s party.
Not only this, Amar has become the go-to person for Shivpal and Sadhna for a number of issues, even for conducting special prayers at Mulayam’s residence to ward off, what Amar says, “impact of malefic planetary positions.”
One may never know what makes Amar Singh so special for the family and not Akhilesh. But if the Firstpost report is true, Akhilesh can’t live in peace for long. Akhilesh would be in a better position if he either quits politics or at least the SP.
