In a major setback to Samajwadi Party, senior party leader Shivpal Singh Yadav has resigned as minister in Akhilesh Yadav-led Uttar Pradesh Government and as the chief of party’s Uttar Pradesh unit. Shivpal, after meeting party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav, submitted his resignation to Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav at his official residence. He also submitted his resignation as party’s state president, a post he was given three days ago by party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav. In a quick development of events, Akhilesh Yadav met Shivpal Yadav at his official Lucknow residence around 8 pm. However, the meeting got over in 15 minutes, signalling a failure to reach consensus on the ongoing issue. After an hour, Akhilesh held a meeting with Mulayam Singh Yadav, followed by Shivpal. As per latest inputs, Shivpal’s wife Sarla has also resigned from the post of District Cooperative Bank Chairperson, Etawah, and son Aditya gave resignation as Chairman of Pradeshik Cooperative Federation. India Today Television reported that Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has not accepted Shivpal’s resignation.
The latest development is set to deepen the feud in Mulayam Singh Yadav’s family. Earlier in the day, Mulayam’s cousin and SP’s national general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav, who is seen as backing the Chief Minister, said that it was an “unintentional mistake” at leadership’s part to remove Akhilesh Yadav as party’s UP president. Akhilesh Yadav was replaced as party’s UP Chief on Wednesday by party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav on Wednesday. The move apparently irked the UP Chief Minister who stripped his uncle of three key ministries. Shivpal was stripped of Revenue, irrigation and PWD portfolios. He, however, was appointed as minister of social welfare, while irrigation went to Awadhesh Prasad and revenue to Balram Yadav. The move led to an feud in the first family of Uttar Pradesh.
