Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam after he was made deputy chief minister of Tamil Nadu. “I congratulate Thiru O Panneerselvam & others who took oath today. I hope Tamil Nadu scales newer heights of progress in the years to come,” Modi said. “Centre assures all possible support to CM Thiru Edappadi K. Palaniswami & Dy CM Thiru O Panneerselvam for the growth of TN. @OfficeOfOPS (sic),” he added. Earlier, AIADMK factions lead by  Panneerselvam and Palaniswami camps announced their merger. Later, Panneerselvam was sworn-in as deputy to current incumbent K Palaniswami. Panneerselvam, a former chief minister of state, was administered oath of office and secrecy by Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao.

The former chief minister was given finance ministry, a portfolio he had held since 2011 when the J Jayalalithaa government was sworn-in. Besides finance portfolio, Panneerselvam will also be heading housing, rural housing, and housing development, Slum Clearance Board and Accommodation Control, Town Planning, urban development and Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority.

He held ministry until his resignation as the chief minister in February to make way for jailed AIADMK chief VK Sasikala, who despite being elected as the leader of the AIADMK Legislature party, could not become the chief minister.  Along with Panneerselvam, his close aide K Pandiarajan was sworn-in as minister for Tamil official language and Tamil culture. Since the former chief minister’s rebellion against Sasikala, D Jayakumar was also entrusted with finance, besides fisheries.
