Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA H S Phoolka has written to the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly asking him to provide Opposition members copies of bills which are to be tabled in the assembly. Phoolka has requested that bills be provided to members of the opposition so that they can study the bill in advance. In his letter to the speaker, the AAP MLA said that the Opposition was not provided with copies of the Law Officers Bill. The bill was tabled and passed in the state assembly but as the Opposition members were not provided with a copy of the bill they weren’t able to participate in the debate regarding the bill, according to a PTI report.
Phoolka stated that as per rule 115 of the Vidhan Sabha working law, the state government is required to provide a copy of any bill, which is to be tabled in the assembly to the opposition 15 days in advance. The AAP MLA added that the Punjab government is going to table important bills in the upcoming session of the assembly. The Speaker of the Assembly has said that the rights of the members of the Opposition will be safeguarded and that the matter will be looked into, according to PTI.
The Aam Aadmi Party managed to secure 20 seats in the Punjab assembly which has 117 seats in the state assembly elections held earlier this year. H S Phoolka is the party’s leader of opposition in the Punjab assembly.
