The ruling AIADMK party on Monday said that a total of 597 people died due to the grief following the demise of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. The AIADMK announced that they would be giving an aid of Rs 3 lakh to each of these families. Earlier, sorrow had taken over the state of TN, when beloved CM Jayalalithaa, also known as ‘Amma’ on December 6 had passed away. Thousands had gathered in front of the Apollo Hospital in Chennai, praying for her recovery. Jayalalithaa, who had first been admitted to the hospital for over 2 months after suffering from fever and fatigue was reportedly on the mend when she suffered a cardiac arrest and had to put on life support.
Political leaders from the entire nation mourned her death. Many prominent celebrities, from film stars to cricketers from the state had attended her funeral. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Pranab Mukherjee were also present for the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s last rites. Amma, as Jayalalitha was fondly called in the country, more prominently in Tamil and was known as the leader of the poor people and was loved for her many welfare schemes such as the Amma canteen.
The passing away of Jayalalithaa was a major shock to the people of Tamil Nadu as was visible from the huge crowd outside the Apollo Hospital for days in a row after her health had fallen apart. Men, women and children were seen grieving and crying as the news of her demise were made public. Her mortal remains were kept in in the Rajaji hall in Chennai where lakhs of her supporters came and paid their last respects. Her final rites were carried out at the Marina beach in Chennai.
