At least 30 people were killed and 150 injured when a Varanasi-bound express train derailed near Rai Bareli in Uttar Pradesh. The incident occurred at 9.10 in the morning.
The incident took place in Bachhrawan station, about 50 km from Lucknow, when a loco pilot of the train missed the signal and entered into the sand hump, derailing the train engine and several coaches. “In the railway budget, I focused on safety as I feel saddened by the loss of life and injuries. We must modernise the crumbling infrastructure,” railway minister Suresh Prabhu tweeted. After the incident, minister of state for railways Manoj Sinha and the railway board chairman rushed to the spot with other senior officials.
