A 28-year old woman was raped in Mumbai on Monday while she was looking for house with her husband. The victim told the police that she was hunting for a house in Amboli with her husband on October 31 when the latter was taken outside by 3 men. The other four stayed back inside and then gang raped her. The police informed reporters that an investigation had already been launched. DCP Ashok Dudhe, Mumbai Police spokesperson informed that 8 people from the area had allegedly raped the women, of whom 7 have already been arrested. He further stated that one of these men, who have been arrested happens to have a criminal history.
According to reports by Mid Day, the couple had been to Shamnagar slum area to look for a house and were helped by a local woman. It was also reported that the duo was staying at the woman’s place for the night where she was gang raped after her husband was sent out for some work. The Amboli Police the registered a case and arrested 7 men, all who were between the age groups of 20-25 and lived in the same area.
Later a medical test at the government-run Vile Parle confirmed the rape. While 7 men have been arrested, the possible involvement of others is still being investigated. DCP Ashok Dudhe also informed the reporters that the victim was stable and the investigation was underway. Deven Bharti, Joint commissioner of Police (Law and Order) told The Hindu that the search for the 8th accused is going on. The 7 accused, who have been nabbed have been charged with gangrape, wrongful confinement, assault and criminal intimidation under the Indian Penal Code.
