CHANDIGARH, Oct 16: The eight day old agitation of the Punjab University Non-teaching Employees Federation demanding payment of arrears has been amicably settled.This follows a discussion between the agitating employees and the Vice Chancellor, Prof M.M.Puri this morning. It marks the end of a bitter round of confrontation in the university which had threatened to engulf senior officials of the university, apart from severely affecting work in the university.
An order issued by the Vice Chancellor today stated that "work will start immediately today for payment due to them in full". The employees were assured that immediate processing for the payment of arrears ranging from Rs 2,500 to Rs 4,000 will be initiated for "B" and "C" categories of employees. It added that intensive efforts for procuring the total due from the Governments will continue, and at their conclusion, the full claim of the employees will be allowed after due adjustment.
Later at a joint rally, president of the Federation Dharam Paul Sharma expressed his gratitude to the authorities, students as well as university fellows who had helped in restoring peace on the campus.
