Mahindras emerge victors

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, OCT 16: Mahindras, Mumbai defeated State Bank of Travancore (SBT), Thiruvananthapuram by a solitary goal (1-0) to lift the Shyama Prasada Cup in the 4th Chief Minister's all-India Football Tournament here today.

Manjit Singh slotted home the winner for the Mumbai outfit in the 43rd minute off a Sanjay Raval pass in a rain-marred final. A steady drizzle and strong breeze disturbed the tempo of the summit clash at the Ambedkar Stadium here.

Mahindras scored almost at the end of the first half through a quick move from the right flank.

Sanjay Rawal lobbed the ball accurately to Satish Minz. But he failed to trap in front of the goalmouth and custodian Feroz Sherif who ran out to clear also missed as the wet ball spilled out of cupped hands and landed just in front of Manjit Singh, who, did not miss the god sent opportunity.

Mahindra played a better game as they succeded in controlling their game in the inclement weather and slippery ground condition. SBT fought hard to draw parity but failedto pierce the rival defence as they lacked coordination upfront. VP Shaji was off colour and was replaced by M Finian towards the end.

BMFC shocked

GUWAHATI: Local favourites Oil India XI shocked Bengal Mumbai Football Club 2-1 to move into the semi-final of the Tata Tea Bardoloi Trophy Football tournament being played here at the Nehru Stadium.

Oil India took the lead in the 31st minute through Mrinal Boro's header. BMFC equalised when a long volley by Nigerian import Sieriki Abdul Latif found the mark. Tapan Chetia scored an opportunistic goal to give Oil India the lead.

Golden win for EB

CALCUTTA: East Bengal created history at the Salt Lake Stadium here today. They are perhaps the first team ever to have won a league title through a golden goal. That moment was the 116th minute of the play-off final of the Calcutta Super Division Football League. The scorer was Raman Vijayan, the lanky striker who has an affinity for golden goals. Raman put the ball into the Mohun Bagan net to theright of goalkeeper Hemant Dora, earning the 25th League title for East Bengal.
