Visweswaran stars in win

MOGA: Grandmaster Pravin Thipsay representing Bank Sports Board (BSB) lost to K Visweswaran of Tamil Nadu in the fifth round of the 21st National Team chess championship being played here. Tamil Nadu men drew other three games to win the round 2.5-1.5.

Life Corporation of India (LIC) continues to be on the top after the fifth round despite being held to a 2-2 draw by Integral Coach Factory (ICF).Results: LIC (15 points) drew ICF (13.5) 2-2, TN (13.5) bt BSB (12.5) 2.5-1.5, PSCB (13.5) bt (10.5) 3-1, Bihar (10.5) lost to IA (13.0) 1-3, KSCB (12) bt Punjab (10.5) 3-1.

Sanjay in lead

CHENNAI: Lucknow's Sanjay Kumar shot to the lead to equal the course record of five under par 65 at the end of the third and penultimate round of the Rs 5 lakh Colour Plus professional golf championship at the Guindy Links.Sanjay, playing for regulation in 13 holes and achieving a birdie on the second, third, sixth, seventh and 14th holes, equalled the course record set by Mukesh Kumarof MHOW in 1995 when he won the Classic Wills Open.

India to host

NEW DELHI: India will host the the first-ever Commonwealth gymnastics championship. The championship will be held in Jaisalmer (Rajasthan) in February, 2000.

The championship was allotted to India at the annual meeting of the Commonwealth Gymnastics Confederation held in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Roy reigns

NEW DELHI: Top seed Sushmita Roy and second seed Saurabh Chakroborty (Bengal) lifted the sub-junior girls' and boys' titles respectively in the Airtel Din Dayal Upadhya prize money table tennis tournament.

Sushmita beat second seed Nandita Saha 15-21, 21-19, 21-17, 21-19 while Chakroborty defeated team-mate and top seed Jayant Chandra 19-21, 21-17, 21-17, 21-14.
