Constable Phirey Ram Bhatti apparently took the lift to the terrace without meeting anyone in his department that is located on the 9th floor of the building. He jumped from the terrace on to the parking lot at the rear of the building. Initially, he could not be identified as he was in plain clothes. However, the identity card in his pocket revealed that he was a traffic constable. He was taken to LNJP Hospital where he was declared dead.

Bhatti had been on casual leave since May 5. Then he took medical leave from May 15. The reason why he had come to the police headquarters when he was officially on leave is not yet known.``We have not yet found any plausible reason as to why he came all the way to the headquarters,'' DCP Upadhyay said.

However, the DCP confirmed that no departmental action had been taken against him which might have provoked him to take such an extreme step.

Since Bhatti had taken ill, he had been working as a despatcher since the last few months. He was posted at the Model Town police station. Earlier he was with the Reserve Police. Bhatti had joined the forces in 1992.

An ECG report was reportedly found in Bhatti's pocket. However, it has not been confirmed whether the report belongs to him since his wife Vijendri Devi, 31, was also ill. The deceased had three sons: Pradeep, 10; Kuldeep, 8; and Praveen, 6. Bhatti hailed from a village in Ghaziabad. His colleagues said that they had not noticed anything odd in his behaviour but the illness might have disturbed him.
