  Inspired Pak stands between India and Independence glory
Tensions run high as India take on Pakistan in the third and deciding final of the three-nation Independence Cup being played in Dhaka today. With the teams going into the match with the scores locked 1-1, the pressure on both sides is heavy. However, India should hold the upper hand, thanks to the supreme form of its batsmen coupled with the absence of key Pakistani players.
  Aravinda anchors Sri Lankan hopes
The fourth of the second and final cricket test being played between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe at Colombo saw a lot of drama. Zimbabwe, who opened the day at 241-6, were bowled out for 299, leaving Sri Lanka 326 to win. Sri Lanka, however, saw a top-order collapse leaving them reeling before Aravinda de Silva, with an unbeaten 87, steered them to 209-5 by close.

Anand back to winning ways
Viswanathan Anand outplayed Loek van Wely of the Netherlands to score his first win of the ongoing Hoogovens International Grandmasters chess tournament yesterday. Anand, who had earlier drawn his first round match against Jan Timman, defeated his opponent in 42 moves.
"Alabama Whippet" upstages Popov
Alexander Popov suffered his first defeat in the World Swimming Championships underway at Perth in Australia. In a shock upset, America's Bill Pilczuk claimed the gold in the 50-metre freestyle dash, relegating Popov to the second spot.

Kunte's norm hopes dashed
National champion Abhijit Kunte's hope for a second Grandmaster norm was quashed yesterday at Linares on Friday. Kunte's nomination dreams were crushed by GM Bogdan Lalic in the ninth and penultimate round of the Fifth Anibal International Chess tournament being played at Linares, Spain.
Qualifier Joshi hogs the limelight
Devendra Joshi defeated Ashok Shandilya yesterday to win the finals of the 64th National Snooker Championships played at Calcutta. In a match marked by errors from both players, Joshi prevailed by seven frames to four by virtue of his fewer mistakes.
