Mumbai Beat -- Ship's crew killed off Mumbai


One Indian and a Pakistani crew member of a Kingstown-registered merchant vessel were killed in Mumbai last Friday after falling off a crane into the empty hold of the ship.

Balaji Kuppuswamy Naidu (18), a deck cadet and Mohammed Ismail Yakub (38) the Pakistani bosun were engaged in scrubbing the holds of the sulphur cargo ship `Al Sabah'. The vessel was anchored at Y1 berth in the port channel and had discharged its cargo. The two crew members were being lowered in a cradle attached to a crane when the ship suddenly rolled, throwing them off the cradle to their deaths 13 metres below, said Yellowgate police.

ICCI chairman gheraoed

Members of the Scindia Workshop Kamgar Kruti Samiti, led by Shiv Sena MP Mohan Rawle today gheraoed the chairman of Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation of India (ICICI), N Vaghul, to press for the release of dues pending since last 118 months. A Samiti press release said the Union government is holding the Scindia workers to ransom under the pretext of recovering a loan of Rs 200 crore.

`Trishna' sets sail

A team of the Indian Army Corps of Engineers today embarked on an expedition to Goa aboard the famed yacht `Trishna'. The expedition to Goa and back was flagged off by Brig. Jagmohan Uppal, chief engineer at the Western naval command. The 13-member team led by major Sandeep Kapur, a veteran sailor, would cover about 1,000 km in seven days and nights.

Blast accused put off stir

All the 66 bomb accused in jail have postponed their mass hunger strike after getting a government assurance of expediting their cases. Most of the accused, who are in jail for more than three years, were to go on hunger strike on the day Prime Minister I K Gujral was scheduled to visit the city on Saturday.
