Pierce to clash with Martinez in final
Defending champion Conchita Martinez beat Swiss teenager Patty Schnyder 6-2, 6-2 here yesterday to line up an Italian Open final against France's Mary Pierce. While the Spaniard, on course for a fifth consecutive title here, was a convincing winner, Pierce had to come from a set down to beat Austrian Barbara Paulus 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the first match on the centre court.

Taylor sets himself a deadline
Australia captain Mark Taylor said he would drop himself for the Ashes Test series against England unless he rediscovered his form as a batsman over the next month. Taylor, whose future has been under a cloud because of a form slump over the past 12 months, gave himself the deadline before flying out of Australia for the six-Test series.

Montgomery records upset win in 100m
American sprinter Tim Montgomery was the upset winner of the 100 metres at the Osaka Athletics Grand Prix yesterday and promptly declared himself a future world record holder. Montgomery was the only one of the seven starters to finish in under 10 seconds, beating fellow Americans Leroy Burrell and Jeff Laynes into second and third respectively.
