Spices Board identifies Japan as attractive market

Japan offers an attractive market for india to enhance its spices exports to that country especially in commodities like pepper, chilli, ginger and seed spices in which India has a strong production base, according to a study done by Spices Board.

“The import pattern of Japan show that they import substantial quantity of the above spices and our share is not significant. For pepper, they mainly depends on Malaysia, for chilli and ginger China and for seed spices Morocco and Iran,” the study says.

Ginger is the single largest item of spices imported by Japan.
According to data, Japan imports one lakh tonne of ginger annually and India’s share is quite negligible, the study points out. With annual production of over 2.5 lakh tonne, India can explore the possibility of capturing a reasonable share, the study says.

The study says that since the scope for export of spice products in consumer packs has little scope in Japan, India should focus on direct marketing with the spice processing industry in Japan. “It is suggested to explore the possibility of a joint venture with some of the spice processors in Japan so that semi-processed spices can be supplied according to their requirements”, the study says.
