Car, bike exports rise in Apr-Oct

New Delhi, Dec 10: Exports of ‘Made-in-India’ commercial vehicles, multi-utility-vehicles, scooters, mopeds and three-wheelers dropped this fiscal, even as cars and motorcycles continued to post positive growth.

Car exports surged ahead by 14.7 per cent at 27,691 units during April-October 2001-02, data compiled by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam) showed.

However, market leader Maruti Udyog’s exports dipped 23.2 per cent to 6,188 cars from 8,059 units in the same period last fiscal.

South Korean car-maker Hyundai Motor posted a 112 per cent rise at 3,285 units during the review period.

Exports of Tata Engineering (Telco) and General Motors, India went up by 7.2 and 12.5 per cent at 281 and 35 cars respectively.

But commercial vehicles exports declined by 27.7 per cent at 5,358 units as against 7,416 units during the year-on-year period due to poor performance by India’s largest commercial vehicle-maker, Telco.

Telco’s light commercial vehicles (LCV) exports fell by 42.7 per cent while in the medium and heavy (M&H) category, it declined by 47.5 per cent to 788 units during the first seven months this fiscal.

Ashok leyland’s M&H exports remained flat at 1,096 units but LCV exports went down by 26.4 per cent to 39 vehicles.

Defying the market trend, Eicher Motors recorded an impressive 69.1 per cent rise in LCV exports at 597 units.

MUVs, which posted rise in domestic sales, saw a 17.3 per cent decline in exports at 3,813 units over 2,182 units in the year-ago period.

Telco’s MUV exports nosedived 42.1 per cent to 1,136 MUVs but Maruti recorded a 126.4 per cent rise at 238 units.

Mahindra and Mahindra also witnessed a 173 per cent jump exporting 314 MUVs during the review period.

Two-wheeler exports slipped 14.8 per cent to 59,154 units from 69,431 units during the year-on-year period even as motorcycle exports went up by 18.9 per cent.

Exports of scooter and mopeds fell by 16.5 and 44.3 per cent at 13,803 and 15,377 units respectively.

Motorcycle-makers Hero Honda and Bajaj Auto recorded a 36.5 and 180 per cent jump in exports at 7,850 and 9,632 units respectively. (PTI)
