SGI-India plans to market video on demand solutions

The India arm of California-headquartered Silicon Graphics (SGI) will market its video on demand solutions in the Indian market. SGI is in talks with a large number of prospective buyers of the solution, said a company official.

“We are in negotiation with large hotel chains across the country. We are also looking at real estate developers who are putting up high end apartment complexes. A lot of people with business in the convergence arena have shown interest in the solution,” said Mr Avinash Fotedar, director, marketing and channels, SGI-India, in a meeting with The Financial Express.

The technology is robust and the proof of concept was established in early nineties. To install the solution in a two-hundred-room hotel would cost about Rs 1 crore, says Mr Fotedar.

The content charges would be additional and would have to be sourced by the establishment where the solution is being installed.

“It would not be difficult to get digital content. Service providers can easily create MPEG format content from existing sources of content,” he adds.

Meanwhile, SGI-India is optimistic about its growth this year. “We had grown about 24 per cent last year and should grow at the same levels this year. The growth will come from sectors such as energy, education, research and government,” said the director. The demand from the manufacturing sector has been affected, he added.

Among other things, SGI-India will aggressively target the market opportunities in the digital asset management space and broadcast automation segments.
