Industry cries foul over move to hike import duty on cotton
  The textile sector, already reeling under the impact of the ongoing global slump, is up in arms against the agriculture ministry’s move to raise the import duty on cotton, saying it will result in closure of more mills, adversely affecting exports as also the employment scenario.
Free trade in IT services may help beat slump: PM
  To cushion the impact of the ongoing slowdown, economies like India should encourage free trade in IT services and free movement of professionals, said Prime Minister AB Vajpayee while inaugurating the 19th Asocio 2001 general assembly and symposium on Thursday.
   
Exports to W Europe, Canada US, Russia slip to minus 2.8pc
  The on-going global slowdown has severely impacted the country’s exports with the entire 12-member European common market countries as well as the US, Canada and Russia buying less goods from the country during April-August 01 than they did in the same period last year, resulting in a negative 2.81 per cent growth.
India, New Zealand to diversify trade through JBCs
  India and New Zealand have agreed to diversify the tradeable baskets through joint business councils. This was indicated during a meeting between commerce and industry minister Murasoli Maran and New Zealand minister for IT, communications and commerce Paul Swain here on Thursday.
