Our eFE Bureau
Thiruvananthapuram: Canara Bank Institute of Information Technology (CBIIT). A high sounding name, isn't it? However, it is not meant for the IT yuppie who dreams of hopping on to the Silicon Valley bandwagon. CBIIT is meant for economically the weaker sections of society to get trained in IT to get employment or self employment. What is more, the training is also provided free of cost as part of the social service of the public sector bank. One more such training institute was added to the nationwide CBIIT network on Thursday when Canara Bank Chairman RJ Kamath formally inaugurated the Thiruvananthapuram centre here. This is the second such training centre to be opened in the state ( the first centre at Alapuzha was opened in January this year). About 25 students from the economically weaker sections of society will be trained for three months in the basics of computers and its operations so as to enable them to get a job. The bank will also provide financial assistance to the students to help them starttheir own business venture, top Canara Bank officials said. The selection criteria is based on income, age and educational levels. Minimum requirement for admission is a pass in the 10th standard. The candidate has to be in the 18-25 age group and the family income has to be less than Rs 2,000 per month. It is estimated that Canara Bank will have to incur a cost of Rs 10,000 per student for providing the training free. The topics to be covered under the three month intensive programme include MS Office, data entry, Windows, programming fundamentals, hardware, software, Internet use among others. CBIIT attached to Canara Bank main offices in various places also have full-fledged laboratory facilities for twenty-five students. Canara Bank already has a record of providing self employment training within Kerala. Two such self-employment training institutes in North Kerala have already provided employment for hundreds of people, even helping some even to get jobs in Gulf countries, according to Canara Bank officials.
