AirTel offers US roaming in Andhra Pradesh

Our eFE Bureau
Hyderabad: AirTel, the cellular service from Bharti Mobile Ltd, has launched US roaming facility in Andhra Pradesh. With this, AirTel becomes the first cellular service in Andhra Pradesh to provide US roaming to its customers.

AirTel customers can now have the same number while travelling to the US. To provide roaming in North America, AirTel has tied up with Nextel Communications Inc of the US. Nextel offers roaming on a all-digital network based on the integrated digital enhanced network or iDEN technology developed by Motorola, according to a press release. IDEN technology provides superior sound and transmission quality utilising modern packet-based transmission methods. To use this roaming service, an AirTel customer has to rent a Motorola I-2000 handset, which operates on the US frequency. The company has tied up with leading cellular handset hiring companies of the US. AirTel is currently offering international roaming to 37 countries through 51 networks. It recently launched roaming service to France, Hungary, the Netherlands and Sri Lanka, according to a press release.
