Citibank India and its parent Citigroup are mobilising resources worldwide to provide financial aid and formulate a reconstruction project to help Gujarat recover from the devastating earthquake that ravaged the state on January 26, 2001.The entire resources of the bank have been put to use to help tide over this disaster. On an operational level, Citibank had immediately set up mechanisms to accept money coming in from its huge customer base and route it to the funds specially set up for the relief work.
For immediate relief, Citigroup, through Citigroup Foundation and Salomon Smith Barmely, has contributed $50,000 (approx Rs 23.3 lakh).
Contributions are being received from customers and employees of Citibank and Citigroup across the globe. A special `Earthquake Relief Account' has been set up in Mumbai, to receive contributions from India and overseas. Citibank will match the employee contributions with an equal amount.
